Yellow Spot Irish Whiskey

[heading subtitle=”Yellow Spot” title=”Irish Whiskey”][row cols_nr=”2″][col size=”8″]Like Green Spot, the 12 Year Old Yellow Spot Single Pot Still Whiskey was produced for Mitchells the Wine Merchants of Kildare Street Dublin and it was delivered from the distillery in the cask to be bottled in Mitchells Shop.

In those days, whiskey casks in Mitchells’ bonded warehouses were daubed with a spot of coloured paint to indicate the age. So Blue, Green, Yellow and Red Spots corresponded to 7, 10, 12and 15 years respectively.

Delivery ceased in 1960 but the great news is that Irish Distillers have resurrected this wonderful 12 Year Old Pot Still Whiskey in recent years. In addition to been matured for 12 years in Bourbon and Sherry casks, Yellow Spot is then finished in Malaga Butts to balance the Pot Still Spice with a honeyed sweetness.

And the future?

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Red Spot make a reappearance in coming years!

Yellow Spot 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

As many people know, I have been a huge fan of Green Spot since it was first released again some years ago. But then along came Yellow Spot which is Green Spot that has been aged for extra years before being finished in Malaga Casks to give a lovely mellow sweetness.

Yellow Spot is probably now my favourite personal whiskey for drinking at home when relaxing. It may be double to treble the price of an entry level whiskey such as Jameson, but boy is it worth it! Like Green Spot, it is produced in limited quantities every year, so buy it if you see it here.

Yellow Spot Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Pepper, spice and cloves with Peaches and honey from the Malaga.
  • Taste: Super mix of warm, creamy tastes with honey, apple sponge and caramel.
  • Finish: Lovely long finish with a dry sweetness from the Malaga.

Stuart Says

If I had to pick one Irish Whiskey to keep in my own home it would be Yellow Spot. It’s exactly what I had in mind as a definition of a Three Pooka Irish Whiskey. It may cost double the Price of a One or Two Pooka Whiskey, but boy is it worth it for all you get without costing the earth. Absolutely superb quality and value from a very very, special Malaga cask finished Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.
