Gilbeys were well known Dublin Whiskey Bonders and Redbreast was a Single Pot Still whiskey produced for Gilbeys by Jameson until Bow Street Distillery closed in 1971. The Director of Gilbeys was an amateur ornithologist, hence the Robin Redbreast name. The last of the Gilbey Redbreast Whiskey bottles ran out in 1985. Irish Distillers relaunched Redbreast, but this time under their own maturation management in 1991 and this use of higher quality casks saw a further improvement in the quality of Redbreast. Since then, the Redbreast reputation has grown exponentially and many now consider it the definitive Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.[/col][col size=”4″]

Redbreast 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey
Redbreast is really serious Irish Whiskey for serious Irish Whiskey drinkers! I thought long and hard about whether I should award Redbreast 12 and Green Spot whiskeys a Two Pooka or Three Pooka based on their sheer quality. What decided me is that they both have firm and solid Three Pooka Siblings in Redbreast 15 and Yellow Spot. On one hand this means that they are victims of their own brand success. On the other hand, these are both at the very top of the Two Pooka Pot Still Irish Whiskeys.
On the occasions when I have been honoured, along with other Whiskey Journalists and Writers to be a guest of Irish distillers down at the Midleton Distillery outside Cork City, we generally find ourselves socialising after work in the nearby Castlemartyr Resort Hotel. I can safely say that 90% of the whiskey writers in my company at these events will always ask for a Redbreast when offered a FREE drink by our Midleton hosts. And what’s more, they continue to buy even when it’s their own round.
Redbreast is what the Irish Whiskey Professionals drink when relaxing. Need I say more!
