Tyrconnell Single Malt
Tír Chonaill would have encompassed the modern county of Donegal and much of her neighbouring counties of Sligo, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone. The Kingdom survived until 1601.
In 1876, the Donegal – Derry based Watt family who owned one of the largest distilleries in Ireland entered a racehorse called “Tyrconnell” in the Irish Classic “National Produce Stakes” where it won against all the odds at an incredible 100 to 1. This spectacular achievement inspired the Watt distillery in Derry to celebrate the occasion with a special commemorative Tyrconnell label. The Tyrconnell was, before American prohibition, one of the biggest selling whiskey brands in the United States. Pre-prohibition photos taken in Yankee Stadium in New York show Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey billboards in positions of prominence at the venue. All three of the company’s brand names enjoyed great success in the export sector. Sales in England, Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the West Indies and the U.S. put Derry on the commercial map as never before.
When the Cooley Irish Whiskey Distillery was created by Dr. John Teeling, Tyrconnell was one of the old iconic Irish whiskey brands that Cooley brought back to life. Tyrconnell whiskey is now available as a standard 10 Year Old Cooley Single Malt and is also available in Port Pipe, Madeira Cask and Sherry Butt finishes at 46% abv as well as 15 Year Old Single Cask expressions.
Tyrconnell Single Malt Tasting Notes
- Nose: A light fruity air with hints of vanilla deepening into richer scents.
- Taste: A honey like sweetness and citrus notes give way to a warming tingle from the malt along with slight oak notes.
- Finish: Long lingering finish influenced by the pot still malt and.
Maybe it’s the fact that Tyrconnell is only double distilled, but I have never really warmed to either the single malt or even the Tyrconnell Finishes expressions featuring Sherry, Port or Madeira. However, this may just be my personal taste. Try for yourself and make your own judgement. Despite anything I may say, Tyrconnell Single Malt has a loyal following outside of Ireland.

Tyrconnell Irish Single Malt Whiskey
The basic Tyrconnell is great value as a 10 year old single malt. My recommendation is to buy this entry level Cooley first before you compare and contrast with the Port, Sherry or Madeira finished expressions.
Tyrconnell 10 Year Old / Port Finish Irish Single Malt Whiskey
Of all of the Tyrconnell Single Malts, this is probably my favourite. The Port Pipes lend a depth and complexity to the nose and taste of this expression which I think may be missing from other expressions.
Tyrconnell 10 Year Old / Madeira Finish Irish Single Malt Whiskey
The Madeira finish adds cinnamon and sweet fruity notes to the spiciness of the single malt.
