Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old
Tullamore DEW was recently purchased by Scottish Distilling Giants Grants who have spent over €35 million in developing a brand new distillery just outside Tullamore town. Once again, Tullamore DEW comes from Tullamore. This 12 Year old expression has been matured in bourbon and sherry casks from 12 to 15 years to add real depth and power to the already excellent Tullamore DEW original.
Blended Irish Whiskey
Tullamore 12 Year Old Special Reserve Irish Whiskey
Tullamore DEW is unique as it combines Pot Still, Malt and Grain Irish whiskies giving it a very rounded and appealing character. It’s an ideal whiskey for the Irish Whiskey beginner to cut their teeth on. Tullamore DEW was originally made in Tullamore town in the Irish midlands until the decline of the Irish whiskey sector in the 1950’s led to the closure of many distilleries in Ireland.
Tullamore DEW the drink and the company survived, but for the last 50 years, Tullamore DEW has actually been a blend of Pot Still and Grain whiskey from Midleton and Malt from Bushmills. Did this make the midlands an Irish whiskey meting pot where the best of North and South Irish whiskey was blended? Who knows.
The great news is that under the ownership of parent company William Grant and Sons, a brand new Tullamore Distillery was built and opened in 2014 just outside Tullamore town. The three brand new pot stills are already producing both pot still and malt whiskey and there are plans to add a further three pot stills later along with a column or Coffey still for grain whiskey production. This will mean that for the first time in 50 or 60 years that Tullamore DEW will once again be 100% made in the town who’s name it bears.
Tullamore DEW 12 Year Old Special Reserve takes the already wonderful Pooka One Tullamore DEW blend and ages it for 12 to 15 years in bourbon and sherry casks. The result is one of the smoothest Irish Whiskeys on the market. In my view it is on a par with a Redbreast 15 or Yellow Spot for smoothness and flavour. Buy this as a present for the Irish whiskey aficionado in your life and you will prove that you know your stuff!
Tullamore 12 Year Old Special Reserve Tasting Notes
- Nose: Pot Still spice with deep sherry overtones and slight citrus airs.
- Taste: Deep creamy mouth feel with strong pot still pepper and spice. The maturation is very evident with strong background notes of oak and vanilla and sherry wood.
- Finish: Long lingering finish with hints of chocolate truffles and marzipan.
Tullamore DEW Original is a very easy drinking whiskey with lots of character. The 12 to 15 years of maturation in Tullamore DEW 12 Year Old Special Reserve take an already excellent all round whiskey to a much higher plain making it one of the great Three Pooka Irish Whiskeys. My advice for aspiring Irish Whiskey aficionados is to try it alongside it half-sister from Bushmills, Bushmills Malt, and half-brother from Midleton Jameson 12 Year Old Special Reserve to train your palate to recognise the contributions from malt, Pot Still and grain.
