Connemara Turf Mór Small Batch
Connemara Turf Mór Small Batch Whiskey Tasting Notes
- Nose: Really deep and heavy Peat nose with slight hint of orchard fruits.
- Taste: Deep strong almost, but not quite overpowering Peat and Turf. Creamy smooth mouth feel with no alcohol burn despite the cask strength
- Finish: Extremely long and pleasant peaty finish.
I have always had a personal soft spot for Connemara Irish Whiskey as my own McNamara surname in Irish is Mac Conn mara. In the Irish language, Conn Mara or Conn Na Mara means Hound of the Sea or Pirate so, Mac Conn Mara means son of the Pirate. The McNamara Clan were pirates who operated on the rugged west coast or Ireland which to this day is still known as Connemara. I travel quite a lot around the world and normally buy presentation packs of 3 Connemara whiskeys and a tasting glass as my own personal corporate gift for those I am visiting. I guess that I have adopted Connemara as the family whiskey, not just because of the family name connection but also because Connemara is a bit of an Irish Whiskey maverick being both double distilled and heavily peated. This makes it just like the more famous Islay Malts such as Laphroaig, which would be one of my favourite Scotch whiskies. However if you read on below, you’ll see why Connemara Irish Whiskey and Turf Mór in particular is all turf and no surf!

Connemara Turf Mór Small Batch Peated Irish Whisky
I had the pleasure of introducing some Scotch Whisky colleagues from HaigWhisky.com to Turf Mór during a visit to one of Ireland’s best whiskey pubs Garavans in Galway. Like myself, they were partial to the heavily peated Scotch Islay Malts such as Laphroaig and Lagavulin. After tasting the really heavy peated Turf Mór, it took us a few minutes to put our finger on the major difference. Connemara Turf Mór is all turf and no surf! There is a deep earthiness to Connemara but without the slightly antiseptic sea salt and iodine associated with the equally strongly peated Islay Malts. While Turf Mór should be about chewing on a sod of turf, it’s actually amazingly deep rich, earthy and creamy mouth feel. What’s also amazing is that even at a cask strength of 58.2% there is absolutely no alcohol burn on the tongue! Add a good splash of water and it changes character again. The water softens and lengthens the finish to an incredible level. I have friends in Germany, France and Belgium who are huge fans of Turf Mór. A few other fellow customers in Garavans followed our lead and were also instant Turf Mór converts. Turf Mór is very different for an Irish Whiskey and very very special. That’s why I have awarded it a Three Pooka rating!
